Lego Maze Coding

Today Team Maunga split into 2 groups for Coding.  Tanya and Mrs R stayed in the class and learned about scratch and Mrs G took a group into the Library to do some coding unplugged.

Mrs G's group worked with buddies and used Lego to build simple mazes and then had to get their Lego character to move from the start of the maze to collect the treasure at the end.  Keywords for this learning were, forward, backwards, turn, left, right and 90 degrees.

Waiahi also went home and redid this activity to show her parents.  They recorded it and sent it back to school.  Check it out!

Assembly Song

Here is a cool movie that we created for our class assembly.  Thanks to Nick our Sound man  who made this movie possible and to Jake and Shiah our recording experts. We hope you find it as fun to watch as it was for us to make!

Also special thanks to Rico and Louisa from Team Moana who came over on Friday morning to learn how to use iMovie on the iMac with Mrs G.  The results are amazing.

End of term - Maths Breakout

Today Room 5 & 6 had great fun trialing out Mrs G's Breakout kits.  They were super excited because they had seen and heard about the big kids doing 'Breakouts', so today was their chance to give it a go!

This breakout was focused on our current and recent Maths learning.  The video link below shows the kids working together, and how this empowered them to use the skills they have learnt in class to solve problems.

Well done Room 5 & 6

Talk to learn - Shopping week

This week in Talk to learn Ngarino and Teziah have been learning communication skills around the topic of shopping.  As a treat they got to put these skills into practice by walking down to our local Dairy and buying an Ice Cream.  They had to use sign language, and their core board to communicate with each other, their Teacher Aids, Me AND the shopkeepers.  Here is a video we have create together to help them relive and build on their learning in the future.  A great REWINDABLE learning example for these children.

Re-writing the Cat in the hat story.

We are working on rewriting the Cat in the Hat story.  This is our shared book this week.  As you can see we are all engrossed in our writing.  When we write/share like this, we can easily build our ideas.  This helps us all to stay focused on our Learning intentions and goals.  This in turns helps us to develop more interesting ideas and stories.

We don't copy each other but we borrow each others ideas.  This means that when we hear, read, or see a good idea, it is OK for us to use it, as long as we make it our own.  This helps us to become great writers, and it also means we have a chance to help others become great writers.  It makes us very proud of ourselves and our friends.
