Swim Safe Movies from week 5 & 6

Here are the swim safe movies from weeks 5 & 6.  Now we have shared them at assembly you will be able to share them with all your friends and talk about all the important learning that can be done around swimming safely both in pools, oceans and rivers.

We are incredibly lucky as New Zealanders that we have so many opportunities to enjoy the water, but it is also very important that we help all our children enjoy it safely.

Enjoy, remember to comment and ask questions to help our children further their own learning by answering your questions.

Swim Safe Week 6 Term 1 2019

Again we had swim safe this week.  This week we were continuing to practice and learn about keeping safe if we fall into water.  Tracey has been very impress at how each week we have improved with what we have been doing with her.

This week we did lots of practice around tilting our heads and floating on our backs.  This is till quite challenging for many of us so we will keep working on this both in our classroom swimming sessions as well as our next swim safe lesson next week.

So to re-cap.  Here are the things we have been learning.
  1. How to break the water with our hounds to protect ourselves
  2. How to go into a mushroom float (so we pop up to the surface safely and don't panic)
  3. How to move from this mushroom float to a position where we can kick on our fronts to safety.
  4. How to go from a kicking on our front position to a floating on our back position.

We have made our learning into rewindable movies but will share them with you all at assembly next week (and it will also pop up on our blog this day for you all to enjoy at home as well).

Strep Throat & Rheumatic Fever

Today we had visitors in to our school to talk to us about how they come into our school to do throat swabs on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.  They reminded us all of the importance of washing our hands and coughing into our arms to help prevent the spread of nasty bugs and also of the importance of taking all the medicine if we need to have them.

Here are some photos of us at the assembly.

Swim Safe Week 5 Term 1 2019

This week in Swim Safe we have been practicing what to do if we find ourselves falling into deep water.

Here are a few things we were learning.

  1. How to break the water with our hands to protect ourselves
  2. How to go into a mushroom float (so we pop up to the surface safely and don't panic)
  3. How to move from this mushroom float position to a position where we can kick to safety.  (this is the one most of us are working on lots as we tend to want to put our feet down still).
You can help us at home if you have a pool by getting us to practice these 3 things and encouraging us not to put our feet down when we move into the kicking position.

  • Our next step is to be able to roll onto our backs by tilting our head towards the closest edge (so we move in the right direction).
Floating on our backs is also very important for us to keep practicing as this enables us to catch our breath and remain safe while in the water.

Here are some photos from this week.  We have a team of children making our video footage into another movie, so watch this space.

Swim Safe with Tracey

Today we had swim safe with Tracey.  We got to practice making huddles and forming lines so we could learn how to work together to stay safe together and look after each other in the water.

We got to practice these on dry land, and then in the water with life jackets on.  It was fantastic to be able to play in the water with life jackets on as this is very different to our normal swimming.  But just as important.

Here is a video that a group of children made up following the session this afternoon.  Thanks Colin, Waiahi, Taysia, Jemima, Nakita and Beau for taking the time at the end of the day to finish this for us.

Shiah rides a bike

This term we have been very lucky to have a new student start with us.  His name is Shiah.  He has been part of a small bike riding group that goes out each morning to ride with Amiee.  Shiah initially didn't believe he could ride a bike, but now look at him go!

He will be racing around our school bike track in no time.
Great work Shiah!

Hip Hop rewindable learning

This term we have been having Hip Hop sessions with Horrace.  We really are enjoying learning all the moves for our new dances each week, but sometimes its hard to remember all the steps, so we decided to make some movies to help us practice when Horrace isn't with us so we can become even more confident with our dances.

We wanted to share it here on our blog so we could revisit it ourselves, but feel free to watch and learn the steps to.  Be sure to let us know how you go with it.

Cross Country

We all did really well in our School Cross Country.

We are very lucky as our school cross country is also the local inter-schools cross country.  Here are some photos of us doing a walk through will all our local schools.

We love our cross country track.  A big thanks to our Local Farmer Mr Gravatt who lets us use the paddocks around our school to make this event so memorable - complete with cow poo and mud!

Bike riding Tuesday

Today we went back out for our weekly bike riding sessions.  We are getting really good at riding and some of us got to ride all the way around the track today.

We also had a few more people learn to ride for the first time with no trainer wheels.  They were Veon, and Heidi.  Here are a few pics they wanted to share of their learning.

Well done Heidi.  You have been working hard towards achieving this for a long time!  What a fantastic accomplishment!

Veon in just a few short week since starting in our class you have become successful in riding a bike on your own.  Well Done.

Ball Skills with Whaea Gina

Today Whaea Gina came to Room 5 and 6 to teach us ball skills.
We learnt how to use our hand to bounce a basket ball, and also how to bounce and chest pass to a buddy.
We had lots of fun and lots of giggles.
Check out our video that Joe, Frank and Teziah put together of our learning.
Next time Whaea Gina is going to teach us rugby ball skills. We can't wait!

Athletics - High Jump

Today Gina from Project Energize came to our school again.  We work on how to jump in different ways.

  • We learn't about how to Jump with 2 feet together and how we needed to bend our knees, hold our hands behind us and spring up, using our arms, to help us propel us upwards.
  • We also learn't about how to do a scissor kick.  Here are some photos of Room 6 having fun with their learning.

ENJOY!

Hockey skills with Brad

Today we were learning about how to play Hockey.  It rained the whole time but we had so much fun!

We learn't how to hold our hockey stick and that we need to keep the 'hook' on the ground.  We had heaps of fun playing 'rob the nest' which helped us learn how to keep the ball close to our stick.

Project Energize - Athletics Practice

Today Gina (from Project Energize) came to work with our classes.

We were learning how to throw different objects.  We practiced throwing shot-put, discus and Nerf (which is the same as a Javelin).  Some of us were really good at it, some of us think we need to keep practicing, but we all had fun.
