Fire Story Publishing

This week we have been writing stories to help us think about fire and fire safety. One of our writing tasks this week meant that we would revisit OREO writing, with this weeks focus being that fire alarms are important.  We hope that this will help our blog readers to comment on week 9's writing challenge.

Enjoy.

Escape plans from week 8 - Writing Challenge

Part of week 8's writing challenge had students talking at home and creating escape plans with their parents.  Here are some examples of escape plans that children shared.

Keep up the amazing writing guys it is fantastic to see.  This week we have enjoyed receiving your different and creative ideas about fire safety.

Bailey worked with her mum and dad and came up with different versions with the same meeting place.  They had great fun thinking and talking together.

Kaelan used Pic Collage to share his ideas about his fire plan and safe meeting place.

Nakita created an Explain Everything about her escape plan.

Aiden even made a cool movie about his fire safety plan!

Play based learning - Week 6, Term 3

This week the Play based learning group has been focused on communication with phones and looking at how they have changed.  On friday as part of their play based learning activities they went to the LEGO room to create their own phones.

Maree our amazing TA has been working with them and when I mentioned that if she got photos I would get a child to convert it into a movie for us, and she said ... "I just find, I'm so busy, I don't get time to take photos"  which was a perfectly valid point ... SO ... instead of acknowledging defeat... and opting for status quo... We improvise and change what we do to make the things that are valuable even more valuable by documenting them, creating with them, and sharing them so we can reflect on our own learning, rewind our learning or help others with their learning.

PLAN B emerged.

This week we chose a year 2 student who was both confident with using an iPad, and confident at writing.  Her job was to make notes while in the Lego room with the play based learning group, and take lots of photos.  When they all came back to a breakout room by Team Maunga, it was her job to write alongside these writers and convert her notes into an explain everything or movie.

This had such potential to be motivating for all involved (including those students within the main class who wanted to be apart of it next time!).  Sienna M did a fantastic job of recording and creating around the learning this group were doing.  Well done everyone!

WAHOO... Lesson here for us all... Where there is a will, there is a way.

Writing happens outside of school

Here is an example of a piece of writing a child completed over the holiday.  When she arrived at school on the first Monday back she asked if she could please publish it onto an explain everything and then have it uploaded to our blog.  Well done Sienna M.

Here is also an example of another piece of writing that a child created to share with the class as they were away sick.  She logged onto our class site to view what it was that the class was writing about.  She was lucky as she had access to a family iPad at home and did her work straight onto it and then shared it with our class.  Well done Nakita.

Both pieces of writing are great examples of how writing can be an enjoyable thing to do both at school and at home.  They are also great examples that we can use as rewindable learning moments to share in class as part of learning we will do in the future.  Well done.

If your child does complete writing at home please help us to share it by either sending it to school with them or taking a photo of what they have done and emailing it to us directly.  Our kids love seeing their work up on the blog and getting comments and questions about what they are doing and learning.  This is such an important part of their learning journey.

Te Ra O Te Wiki

This week we have been learning the days of the week in Te Reo.  We have been learning the actions to go with it to help us remember.

So...

To help us remember the days of the week, we created a short movie that we can replay to help us.

Mrs G got Matua to help us work out how to convert this into a Matua/Whaea Says (like Simon Says) game which we hope to present at our assembly in Week 2.  Thank you Frank, Liam and Cheyne for volunteering to take on this role in our assembly!  It is a big one.

Here is the words that we will be using to help us practice our days of the week (as well as other actions that we use in our classroom on a daily basis).

Here is the next lot of stop motion movies.  Arn't they fantastic.  Our children are so excited to see how their writing of story boards helps to create amazing movies.

Our new School Pou

Recently we had our new Pou unveiling.  Here is a story that Sienna M made and published using Explain Everything.  The part she enjoyed most was taking and adding pictures.  It was really strange because Mrs G suggested taking these pictures in Portrait rather than Landscape (but they soon worked out why).

Sienna M wanted to share this 'Recount' as it had a clear introduction, sequence and conclusion.

Recounts haven't been our classes focus for a while so Mrs G and Ms F were very proud that Sienna M had remembered to include all these parts of a recount.  Mrs Craig was too.

One thing Sienna M learn't was that she needed to count 1, 2, after she and finished talking so she didn't end up cutting the end off her recording.  Great effort Sienna M.

Maths Statistics Inquiries.

What a busy start to school we have had in Team Maunga.  Mrs G has been working hard to establish new routines to make using iPads in our class easier and while she was doing this she discovered some Statistics work that we had wanted to share (but it got lost in our old system).  So here it is

Children came up with ideas/topics to ask questions about.

Laylah continued on with finding out about how much plastic is brought to school in peoples lunchboxes.  This showed that in Team Maunga we don't bring much 'plastic rubbish' to school, with many children in Team Maunga not having any rubbish at all.  She found that in Team Awa there seemed to be more rubbish and in Team Moana there was LOTS.

So in Team Maunga we have decided to set a CHALLENGE!

We want to Challenge the other teams to beat us next time we do this survey.  Lets reduce our rubbish and keep our school looking fantastic!

Word Works Starts

This week we started up our 3 Minute Frenzy.  On Monday we had a chat about what a 3 minute frenzy is and how they could practice at home or at school for Wednesdays 3 minute Frenzy Launch, however Wednesday got so busy that we had to cut our session short.  This was very disappointing for a number of children who had been practicing in their own spare time, so so instead of doing it Wednesday we did it on Thursday.  Here are the 4 'Word works stars' for week 3.  Two children are year 2, and two are year 1's.  This is amazing stuff.  Ms F and I can't wait to see what you can achieve by the end of the year!

WATCH OUT WORLD here comes OHAEAWAI KIDS!

Welcome to Team Maunga!

On Monday the newbies moved into Room 5 and 6 to learn. They are Saxdyn, Frank, Riah, and Heidi. It is so much fun because we can help them. When we play with them they are kind to us.
We love having them in our team!

Puppet Pal - Story Telling

This week we were lucky to have a few extra children in our class for a couple of days.  Te Aranui and Jayden (from Team Moana) helped some of our children to create some puppet pal examples of stories they had been reading this week.  This groups reading goal has been to increase reading fluency and to read with expression.  Well done to you all.

June Reading Certificates

Well done to our June 60 night certificate readers!  You guys are AMAZING!

We love seeing you progressing in your reading and being able to move your plane around NZ (and the world) to show what level you are on in your reading!  We love that you are so independent in being able to explain to visitors and your parents where you are, what your learning goals are, what you need to do to achieve these goals.  Fantastic!

Well done also to the children who got their 30 Night certificates in June!  Keep it up and you will go far!

PS>  Thanks Jake for the great photography.  Love that you take this on and just do it for our classroom!
