Speech Assembly 2020

This year with COVID-19 our school speech assembly wasn't able to take place as we would have liked, so rather than canceling it we postponed it until it was safe to hold this event altogether.

All children wrote speeches as part of our Term 3 learning and these were outstanding.  Quinn and Kaden were the children selected from Team Maunga Iti, and Amelia, Hannah, Tommy, and Sadie were selected from Team Maunga, to share their persuasive writing/speech making.

Here are their speeches, as they were great examples of what Year 1 and 2 students can strive to achieve.  (These will automatically play below so keep watching).

Te Tino O Te Taiamai - Stories

As part of our learning about our local area we all wrote stories (including Mrs G).  We also published them by creating a story map and then using Explain Everything to share and record our versions.  Our writing was amazing as we had so much to write about and it was a great experience for us all.  We hope you enjoy our work.

Te Tino O Te Taiamai - Shared book

Mrs G wrote a Story for our Shared book Last week, and we became the illustrators for our own book.  Then Mrs G turned it into a digital book that we could read whenever we wanted to.  WE LOVE IT!

It was based on our visit to Te Tino O Te Taiamai.  This week while Team Moana was away at school camp we were also able to borrow Whaea Aimee to help us turn it into a Movie, where we were the stars.  We had so much fun learning and reading about our local landmark.  We also wrote our own stories which we published as well - We were so excited to share these with Matua Ken.

Below is our Digital book, and the Movie we made.  We will create another post with our amazing Te Tino O Te Taiamai Stories.

Frog publishing

Last week we have had lots of fun writing and learning about Frogs and their life cycle.  We learned lots of interesting facts and practiced writing sentences that had interesting adjectives (describing words) and verbs (doing words).  At the end of the week, we published one of our stories and used a picture animation tool (ChatterKid) to record our stories to share for our assembly, and for our parents.  We were really proud of them.  We also had to learn lots about speaking with expression, clearly and loudly.  We also did lots of talking about background noise.

We hope you enjoy our movies.

How Maui Slowed Tamanui Te Ra.

At the end of the last term we created stories about How Maui slowed Tamanui Te Ra. We read books about this traditional story and also looked at simple versions that other students at our school had created in the past. A few of us wanted to publish our stories for the school library. James has turned his work into an Explain Everything to share at our assembly.

 Enjoy.

Explain Everything Space Stories

Here are some examples of this week's publishing.  Instead of writing them out and putting them up on the wall, we decided to publish using Explain everything.  We are getting quicker at making our own avatars, and backgrounds.  We are also getting good at finding quiet spots to record our stories.  We hope you enjoy them!

Maunga and Iti Space Stories

Team Maunga and Iti have been reading and learning all about Space.  We have also been busy creating different things to turn our classroom into a space place and we are finding it all very exciting.  Here are some stories we wrote after reading different books and looking at different videos about rockets and them lifting off into space.  We were trying to use interesting words to describe the parts of our rockets.  We hope you enjoy it.

Deano Yipadee our Virtual Author Experience

Today we had a virtual Author visit us via a direct link.  He sang us some of his favourite songs which he has made into books and we all had a great time singing and dancing along too.  He talks to us about how authors get their creative thoughts from everywhere especially the funny and sometimes silly things that happen around us.

Here are some photos of us having fun listening to him reading and singing us his stories as well as us dancing and having fun.  We think reading and writing is MAGIC!  Lots of us want to be authors too.

PS:  We are still in Covid Level 2 restrictions at our school so we have to stay at our tables and keep in our own spaces.  But we still had lots of fun together.

Stop motion creations to publishing our writing

This week we were very excited about our publishing.  We had written stories about events on a farm and then we created a stop motion to show this.  We then recorded over the top our stories and this was our publishing.  We had so much fun.  It was hard work but we really enjoyed this experience.

Farm Scenes Using Stop Motion

Currently, we are doing a fantastic school kit called 'the farming kit'  So lots of our learning at the moment is all about farming and what it is like, the animals, who work on farms and why they are important.

This week we had lots of fun working together to create small movies using the blocks, farm animals, and vehicles that Mrs G brought in.

Some things we have been learning about when making Stop Motion movies
  • You need to set your scene up, where it's not in the way (otherwise it gets broken by accident)
  • You have to take LOTS of pictures
  • Each picture is only slightly different from the last picture (MOVE IT JUST A LITTLE BIT).
  • Your iPad needs to be set up so it doesn't fall over or get moved.
Here are some examples of what we have been doing to practice these skills.

5 Little bubbles Poem

In the last few weeks we have been practicing poems about Bubbles and writing our own stories.  Here is some of our work.  We have been focusing on reading and writing simple sentences that use high-frequency words.  These will help us with our spelling, reading, and writing.  We are so excited about what we are able to achieve.

We also recorded our poem using garage band and then made it into a movie.  We hope you enjoy.

Colins Space Story

Colin has worked hard this week to produce a story about space.

Colin wrote a story each day.  He then took a photo of each of these and recorded his story on the iPad as his publishing on Friday with Bev.  He loved making his avatar and Bev helped him move it as he read his story.  This made him giggle lots and lots as he got to see himself moving around the screen as his story was read back to him in his own voice.  Great work Colin.

Stories about Leaves

Here are a few leaf stories that have been captured on iPads.  Well done boys for your fantastic writing today.  It's wonderful to see how clever you are at sounding out your words to share the ideas you have in your head.

Coded conversations

In writing today we worked on creating mini conversations.  When we had finished we then used coding to create clips of our conversations.  We learnt about how to use different coloured coding blocks to program different parts of our conversations.  We hope you enjoy watching our first attempts at combining our writing with our coding.

Week 11 - 3 Minute Frenzy Stars

Here are term 1's final 3 minute frenzy stars (We did it a day early as we have heaps of fun planned for our last day).

A big congratulations to all our tamariki on how they are setting themselves goals to improve each week.  Love seeing how you are achieving your goals Team Maunga.

Remember to keep practicing over the holidays so you are ready for Term 2.

Week 10 - 3 Minute Frenzy Stars

Here are this weeks 3 minute frenzy stars.  The children aim to improve their own score and we track it so we can easily see how they have improved.  These children have been choosen as they are consistently showing improvement across the term.  Keep practicing.  Remember the tip from last week about practicing writing word families as this help to speed up writing down simple words.

Well done Waiahi, Harley, Kaelan, and Aston

Week 9 - Word Works Star

Here we go again with 3 Minute Frenzy Stars

Congratulations Levi, Jemima and Beau.  Remember everyone to keep practicing writing word families as this is a way to get quicker at writing as many words in 3 minutes as you can.  Start with ones like 'at, cat, mat, sat, bat, rat, that, spat...' then move on to other ones like 'it, fit, bit, sit, mit, kit ...'.

Week 8 - 3 Minute Frenzy

This week Maggie joined the word works group in room 6 and did her first 3 minute frenzy in her book.  She did great and achieved 12 words with Mrs G helping her to think about words.

This week Mrs G set the challenge for the rest of our word works group to complete their 3 minute frenzy without her prompting them with words to write.  This was quite a challenge but despite this Harley and Nakita achieved their personal best and in Nakita's case, she met goal of 21 words for this week.  Well done both Harley and Nakita.

Keep up the great work everyone, I really love seeing what you can do.

Week 7 - 3 Minute Frenzy Stars

Here are week 7's  3 Minute Fenzy Stars.  One of them almost doubled her score from last week and got 20.  Well done Ivy L.  Well done also to Nerali and Aston, who continue to improve their scores each week!

Fantastic work everyone!
