Robotics - The Gruffalo Bee-Bots

Team Maunga have been learning to use the bee-bots. We got creative and attached a mouse to the bee-bots. Team Maunga children then helped the mouse get to the nut, in order to do that they had to dodge the 'bugs' - The Gruffalo, Snake, Fox and Owl. It was great to see the children communicating in their groups and supporting each other to work out which direction the mouse needed to go.

Check out your children's Seesaw account to see their robotic learning.

Computational Thinking can be practiced by using our own bodies and leading someone from one point to another without bumping into obstacles along the way.

Different language that can be used; go forward, go back, turn left, turn right, turn clockwise, turn anti-clockwise.

Challenge: During lockdown can you use your knowledge of Computational Thinking to lead someone from one point to another?

Pairs of Legs Maths with Whaea Diane

Today Whaea Diane came into our class again.  We got to complete activities based around pairs of legs.  We learned that pairs were groups of 2.  We talked about how we have a pair of legs and that means we have 2 legs.  We talked about how if there were 2 pairs of shoes then that would be 4 shoes... And LOTS of other things too.

Then we worked on some animal pictures.  We had to answer 4 questions.  How many animals were there? How many pairs of legs were there? and How many legs were there altogether.  We didn't get to answer all of the questions but we did discover that we could group our cards in a way that would help us work out how many pairs of legs there were altogether.

This made us realize how important the number 5 is and how learning not only to count to 5 and back from 5 but also our basic facts to 5 is so important.

10 colourful Squares/Monsters

Here is a movie to show the shared book that we created for maths about our shape monsters.  These are stories we created to share our knowledge about numbers.  We hope you enjoy.

We took pictures of our work and then put them into Explain Everything.  We then recorded ourselves reading our stories to share with everyone.

Fun Maths Friday

Today we had a very exciting maths session.  We got to practice different maths activities and games around the room.  We then all came back together to share what we had been learning.  Some of us were practicing our counting, some of us were adding and taking away. Some of us were practicing our basic facts, and before and after numbers.

Here are a few photos of us having fun today.  Enjoy.

Maths with Mrs Ogle Week 8

This week we had Mrs Ogle come and visit our class again to help us all with our math's.  This was fantastic to be able to all see how far we have come in this math's journey this year (and to get some ideas of where to head next.

We began the session by counting in different ways, and with different patterns.  E.g. in 2's (using a 'sit, stand' pattern) in 3's (using a 'sit, sit, stand' pattern) and in 4's (using a 'sit, sit, sit, stand' pattern).

Dianne's Problem was one that she used at different levels across our whole school and Team Maunga focused on going up to the number 20 to solve the problem and answer a number of question about it.

The problem told us that :  Andrew had 20 biscuits.  He iced every second one, put a cherry on every 3rd one and every 4th got a chocolate button.  Some of the questions the children answered about this problem included, how many biscuits had icing on them, how many biscuits had nothing on them  and could a biscuit have all 3 things on them.  This caused LOTS of discussion, problem solving, drawing to find the answers and using materials to answer it too.

Like normal we all came back to share some of the great work we did and today we all stood around a table where a group had used materials to clearly show what was happening with the problem.

Interestingly a few days latter, these 2 cute monkeys were spotted practicing their patterns using our 100's board.  Well done Jemima and Taysia for keeping the learning alive!

Maths Problem Solving

This week children in Team Maunga have been working on a problem that requires sorting, grouping, classifying and discussing their ideas.  It leads to lots of discussions of how to represent numbers and even looking for numbers to add together to quickly find out answers.  Fantastic stuff Team Maunga

Here are a few photos of groups sharing their ideas with the class.  Well done guys.  Can't wait for next week.

Tuesday's Maths Week Questions

Here are the questions for Tuesday!  I am moving how I am receiving your answers and emails!  Fantastic stuff Room 5 & 6.  Looking forward to having you send me emails tomorrow as well.

PS.  I like how you have also added comments to Mondays problem as it makes this more exciting for everyone (including me).

Remember to have fun as you do this challenge as well.

Also exciting news.  So far our Year 1's are ranking 8th in the world for our scores on Matifics Maths week warmup - Their challenge begins in 6 hours (I'm guessing because of different time differences).  So lets keep this up Year 1's.  Looking forward to seeing our Year 2's stepping up as well.  WAHOO!!!

Maths Week has arrived!

Here is Mondays Question for you all to puzzle over together.  Mondays answers need to be to me by Monday night, so they can be put into the box in the Library during the day or emailed to me (Mrs G) tonight.

HAVE FUN!

PS.  Tuesdays Question I post on here tonight (so you can have a head start if you pop back on here).

Matific

As many of you will now know Room 5 & 6, are entering a Matific competition as part of New Zealand's Maths week, happening next week.  Each child has their login and password in the front of their Learning Journals (unless they have not been bringing them to school).  From Thursday our children have been learning to log in as part of a warm up for this competition.  Currently we are ranking on the leader table so this is great news for all of us.

We have set tasks for our children in Matific and these relate to building number knowledge.  Some tasks may seem nice and simple but others will seem more complicated.  Although you can login via  www.matific.com , I would encourage you to download the app if you are using a tablet or your phone.

Although we will not have access to Matific for a long period of time it seems like a fun and interactive way to engage our children in maths.  Please feel free to contact your child's teacher if you have any questions.

Measurement Maths

When having a clean out of iPads I located these two examples of how children use iPads in our classroom to record events that they do and thing they are learning about.

They relate to our Measurement maths that we had at the end of Term 2.  We hope you enjoy.

This video shows children using different non-standard units to measure their own shadows and learn how to compare their measurements and shadows to their peers.  It was a fantastic fun way to practice these skills that will become apart of their life long learning journey.

This Explain Everything is a presentation that the children made to record the things they measured.  Great work guys, it was a fantastic idea.

Maths workshops

Heidi has the iMovie bug!!!

Today we had our maths workshops.  We decided to take some short snippets of things we were doing.  Heidi saw the opportunity to step up again... Not only has she volunteered to run one of our workshops next week but she also wanted to create an iMovie to show others what we do.

She worked with Legacy and Stella to get this movie published in time to share at our assembly in the afternoon.

Pretty impressive.

Captain Cashtastic

On Wednesday we had a very special visitor come to our school...
Captain Cashtastic!
He taught us all about the different types of money and their values. we also learnt the difference between a want and a need. Some things we need to buy to help our lives like food or clothing. Some things we want to buy but we don't really need like toys.
We can't wait for this savings superhero to come back again!

Maths Statistics Inquiries.

What a busy start to school we have had in Team Maunga.  Mrs G has been working hard to establish new routines to make using iPads in our class easier and while she was doing this she discovered some Statistics work that we had wanted to share (but it got lost in our old system).  So here it is

Children came up with ideas/topics to ask questions about.

Laylah continued on with finding out about how much plastic is brought to school in peoples lunchboxes.  This showed that in Team Maunga we don't bring much 'plastic rubbish' to school, with many children in Team Maunga not having any rubbish at all.  She found that in Team Awa there seemed to be more rubbish and in Team Moana there was LOTS.

So in Team Maunga we have decided to set a CHALLENGE!

We want to Challenge the other teams to beat us next time we do this survey.  Lets reduce our rubbish and keep our school looking fantastic!

Counting on practice

Today a group of children were learning to explain to others how to count on in Maths.  They worked in small groups and would take turns drawing cards, adding pictures to their explain everything document, and then recording how they would solved it.  This will be a rewindable learning resources that they can use themselves and for when they take workshops for others in the class on this topic.  Keep watching our blog to see other examples of this over the next couple of weeks.

Well done, Charlee, Harlem and Nicole.

Place Value Maths

Recently we have been learning face value, place value and total value and using place value equipment to help us with maths problems.  Below is a picture of us working in pairs to add place value equipment together.

Here are some pictures of what we needed to be able to understand before we could to this activity above.

"We have enjoyed using the place value equipment as we can see what the numbers look like".
