Maunga Nui and Iti's Assembly 10th May 2019

On Friday we shared our learning at our assembly.
Here are are our movies that show our space writing that we put onto green screen. Nui wrote about a starry night, Iti were using adjectives to describe the sun. Come into our class and have a look at all our published stories on our writing frames.

In the afternoons Maunga Iti have been working with Team Maunga exploring rocket launches into space. Hannah worked with Harley Barlow, Susanna worked with Kaelan, Tyler worked with Rakai, and Andrew worked with Ivy and Daniel S, to create a Stop Motion of a rocket launch. First they had to create their rockets in the LEGO room. Then we learnt how to take lots of pictures moving our rocket slowly each step. When we played our movie it made our rockets look like they were launching into space all by themselves. This week we are learning about gravity. The children choose the activity they want to do over the week to learn and explore more about our theme.
Here are their Stop Motions.

Writing our versions of 'Baby Shark'

This week as part of writing our children turned one of their favorite songs into a new version.  Here are 2 that we shared with our assembly.   First the children listened to different versions of 'baby shark' and then had little chats about how they could change it.  We have cleaning up version to santa versions to dinosaur and kiwi version.  It was fantastic.

Lets just say our writing on this day was not particularly quiet, but the children were very focused on their own versions, singing them away to themselves as they wrote.

Afterwards the some children had time to record their versions in garage band using a backing track Mrs G had already made up for them.  Then this was used in iMovie to record their version.  One group even used the green room to record their version.

Well done to you all.   Writing songs is a great reason to write, and it is so fun too.

Plant Report Publishing

This week we broke into 2 groups for publishing.  One group published their work by hand to go up on our writing wall, and the other group published on explain everything, so we could share these examples and help us to reflect on our learning.

This weeks writing has focused lots on how we write reports, as a topic to focus on we looked mainly at plants and herbs.  The children really enjoyed going out each morning to gather herbs from our school garden.  On friday we painted some concrete blocks with the words Kawakawa on to support Team Awa's gardening as a thank you.

We talked about reports needing an introduction, followed by information specific to what it is the report is about, and then a conclusion.  Here are some of our finished publishing examples for you to enjoy and comment on.

Found Poems - Get NZ Writing

Here are some examples of Found poems that we created.  We looked them up and decided they were a bit like blackout poems.  Below are some examples of what we came up with.

To make them we had to start with a piece of text.  We decided that rather than using a newspaper we would use some of the story we had focused on last week.  And why not ... MONSTERS are ALWAYS a fun topic.

Second we spent time finding and circling key words that we liked in the writing.
Next we found words that would link our key words together.
Finally we spent time blacking out the rest of the words on the page.

Get NZ Writing Package

In Team Maunga we have been learning lots about writing letters and postcards this term.  This was leading us up to sending a package to a school in Stratford.  Here are some images of us getting our package ready to send.  Remember to ask us about what we should include in a Letter or Postcard (or ask us about how we use WETA for letter writing / Postcards.  For more information on this please look up other posts on this topic.

Preparing the postcards and messages.

Taking photos to explain the rock we included in our parcel

Revisiting statistics work from the beginning of the year to work out how many siblings we have altogether.  We loved using Tally marks to help work this out.

Researching who could lick their elbow (not all children have photos here so ask your child if this was them).

Working out who our tongue rollers were (again there were more children than we have images of here so ask your child about this).

Sealing the package and Posting it at our Local NZ Post shop.

THANKYOU SO MUCH FOR THIS AMAZING EXPERIENCE WAREHOUSE STATIONARY!

How to Make a Paper Plane

For the last week we have been learning about air pressure. Veon wanted to make a paper plane to see what would happen to it with the pressure from different air forces. On Monday we learnt how to make a paper plane. We looked at YouTube tutorials to show us how people present instructions. Olivia, Ella, Shiah, and Kaira have put together a video explaining how to make a basic paper plane. The Hovercrafts (reading group) wrote up the steps for us on Pic Collage. Tomorrow we will try to follow these instructions to make planes to test with different air pressures, like a fan, hair dryer, or air released from a balloon. Cheyne wants to try and make different designs to see which paper plane will fly the longest distance.
Check out our video to see if you can make a paper plane. Please let us know how it goes!
