T-Shirts from Nana - EE uploads

Here are a couple of examples of Explain Everything that were completed last week as part of our reading program.  Last week was an extremely busy week for us with all our other activities going on at school, and Mrs G being out for a couple of days as well as Greats and Grands day.

It is fantastic to see how independent some of our tamariki are getting at completing these tasks and uploading them to the right places.  Well done guys.

We are hoping to have a few extra "T-Shirts from Nana" EE's added to our blog later this week, but enjoy these in the meantime.  Also, look out for this week's Honeymakers activity which will also link to our play make create T-Shaped literacy, reading and Beeswax wraps that we will be completed in class this week and next.

Maths Statistics Inquiries.

What a busy start to school we have had in Team Maunga.  Mrs G has been working hard to establish new routines to make using iPads in our class easier and while she was doing this she discovered some Statistics work that we had wanted to share (but it got lost in our old system).  So here it is

Children came up with ideas/topics to ask questions about.

Laylah continued on with finding out about how much plastic is brought to school in peoples lunchboxes.  This showed that in Team Maunga we don't bring much 'plastic rubbish' to school, with many children in Team Maunga not having any rubbish at all.  She found that in Team Awa there seemed to be more rubbish and in Team Moana there was LOTS.

So in Team Maunga we have decided to set a CHALLENGE!

We want to Challenge the other teams to beat us next time we do this survey.  Lets reduce our rubbish and keep our school looking fantastic!

Zaviers Tuatara Animal Report

Last week we continued with our animal reports and researching different animals.  One of the creatures we talked about (but didn't get around to looking into in detail) was the Tuatara.

Over the weekend Zavier did his own research and brought it back to share this morning.  It was a fantastic example of an animal recount from a year 2.  Well done Zavier.  Mrs S and I were so impressed with how your had researched, and written your report, that instead of doing more research with the rest of the class, you were able to move straight into publishing your report to share.  Well done on your amazing work.

Animal Reports

Many children in our class are really engaged in our current writing topic of Animal Reports.  A number of children have been so excited about researching topics that they have been doing so at home as well as at school.

The diagram below is one we created to help the children in class to remember the things that need to be included in an animal report, and this is helping them with their research at school.   This may support any one at home wishing to continue doing research.

Feel free to email your findings to us, or take pictures of your child's work (or you researching together) which can be a lot of fun.  We always love sharing these at morning news time.

HAPPY RESEARCHING!!!

Mini Inquiries - student led

I have to say SORRY to all the parents of children in the Jets and Bicycles who have been bombarded with children bring crickets to and from school.  This has also becoming a class wide experience as more children get recruited to find crickets in the playground.

Last week the children had a book about crickets, and I encouraged them to make a cricket house, and research crickets.  They loved making these and taking them home, with crickets inside.  This kind of learning has continued at school I promise you, with children overturning rocks and chasing crickets all around the playground.  They have also looked up books in the library and enjoyed re-reading the cricket book we had used in class.

This has been a fantastic learning context for the children so please bear with it and remember to ask them questions about what they are learning.  If you have time you could also look up information about crickets together.  Feel free to email me information and photos of your experiences together!

Independent Reading Projects

Some of our reading groups have been working with a buddy to create an independent Reading Projected based around their interest in the Olympic Games.  Students got to choose a buddy to work with for this project, and then worked through a framework that would support them to create this as it is their first project of this type.

Students had guided reading sessions with me (reading texts about the Olympics), were able to access pre-selected online learning sites that would support them in answering these questions as well as utilizing the library resources on their 'book club' day.  On Thursday afternoon they went to show their presentations to children in the senior room who offered them feedback and support to improve these presentation further.  Students then shared these with our class.  Here are a few that we wanted to share with you.
