Karakia to support a pepeha speaker

Here is a rewindable learning video Team Maunga created to help them learn this karakia that would support someone who saying their pepeha.  Again leading up to our Auckland trip, where we will visit and stay on a Marae this video will be very useful to help us all remember what we could say.

Pepeha learning

In Team Maunga we like to learn about our Pepeha and to begin sharing these with others.  Here is a rewindable learning video to help team Maunga (especially leading up to the zoo trip).

Speech Finals

For the last few weeks, we have been busy writing speeches about things we think are the best.  All students in team Maunga participated in this and shared some amazing work with their peers.  We are so proud of all their efforts and how well they shared their ideas with others.

Today as part of Team Moana's assembly a few students from each team presented their speeches to the whole school and to parents who came to watch.

The Ned Show

Today we went to the Ned show in Team Awa. Ned stands for ...

N ... never give up
E ... encourage others
D ... do your best

N... Never give up
We learn't about the power of Yet and that if we arn't good at something if we add the word YET, it makes it that we will keep working on it and getting better at it.

The Ned lady told us that even if we take 2 steps forward, and 1 step back, we are still going forward. We might not be going as fast as we could but we are still going forward.

E... Encourage others
She also told us that when you encourage others you give them courage, so we should encourage others more.
D... Do your best
When we do your best, we get over saying I know ... because when you always say I know ... you don't know what you don't know.

Let go of "I know" ... so you can learn and grow.

Go brain go

Fun Maths Friday

Today we had a very exciting maths session.  We got to practice different maths activities and games around the room.  We then all came back together to share what we had been learning.  Some of us were practicing our counting, some of us were adding and taking away. Some of us were practicing our basic facts, and before and after numbers.

Here are a few photos of us having fun today.  Enjoy.

T shaped literacy

We have started using T-Shaped literacy in our class.  We read books as a class and then work with buddies at our table to record ideas about questions that help us think about the things that are happening in the stories.  Here are some photos and an Explain Everything that was created during this time as part of T-Shaped literacy work.

Our T-Shaped literacy often links both our reading and writing together as well as topics we are focusing on.  Currently, we are focusing on Animals, looking at different types of animals and their different habitats (both in the wild and as zoo animals and as pets.  This is helping us get ready for our Zoo trip in late August.

The previous topic that we were focusing on was about Myths and Legends.  Here is an Explain Everything of a story that was being re-told.  Our publishing during this Myths and Legends T-Shaped literacy focus was acting out myths we had focused on and we recorded these.  We hope to be able to share with you all what these look like.

Colins Space Story

Colin has worked hard this week to produce a story about space.

Colin wrote a story each day.  He then took a photo of each of these and recorded his story on the iPad as his publishing on Friday with Bev.  He loved making his avatar and Bev helped him move it as he read his story.  This made him giggle lots and lots as he got to see himself moving around the screen as his story was read back to him in his own voice.  Great work Colin.

Recount Story Publishing

Here are some examples of Recounts that have been written this last week.  Super proud of how the children are structuring their writing to include their introduction, body and conclusion.  This helps our children to form a story that is interesting and informative for the people that are reading.  No wonder some of our children are wanting to become authors when they grow up.  Well done everyone.  Keep up the great work.

Leaf Environmental Writing

We like writing about things that we can collect and draw in our school.  Today we did environmental writing on leaves that we collected.  Some were still green, some were turning brown.  We liked seeing the veins and lines that they had on the.  Mrs G even though we could use some of these leaves to make some concrete bowls for our art exhibition later this term.

Coded conversations

In writing today we worked on creating mini conversations.  When we had finished we then used coding to create clips of our conversations.  We learnt about how to use different coloured coding blocks to program different parts of our conversations.  We hope you enjoy watching our first attempts at combining our writing with our coding.

Scratch Jr Coding with Tanya

On Tuesday Tanya came in to help us learn about Scratch Jr a coding programme on the iPads. This week we were learning to change the size and speed of objects. Then we showed how gravity affects objects. We are picking up the new coding skills quickly.  Maunga Iti and Nui learn together and help each other.
We really enjoy Tanya's visits and look forward to the next one!

Project energize - Food groups

Today Fui came to our class from Project energize.

She talked about how our body is kind of like a car.  If we didn't put petrol in our car it won't work.  But we also need to make sure we put the right fuel into our cars.

This is the same in our bodies.

We then learnt about 4 main food groups (and 1 extra group).

Vegetables & Fruit
Red (Apples, Tomatoes, Strawberries).
Yellow (Banana's, Capsicums,
Green (Lettuce, Broccoli, Apples)\

These have vitamins and minerals. - These help you get stronger and stronger and make our brains work (waiahi).  They make our brains smarter (Tyler)

They are like SUPERHEROS - these vitamins are high in fiber.

We need HEAPs of servings of these each day.

We call this the GLOW group.  (We need 5 or more helpings of this a day).

Milk and milk products
These foods have lots of calcium.  This makes our bones and teeth strong.

We call this a GROW group.  (We need 2or 3 servings per day)

Meat  and meat alternatives
These have proteins - this makes your body stronger.

We also call this a Grow group.  (We need 1 or 2 servings per day)

Grains
These give us the energy that makes us go.

We call this a GO group (we need 5 servings per day)

These include things made from wheat.
(bread popcorn, Weetbix

There is also a SLOW food group (we should only eat these SOMETIMES)
These are high in sugar.

Chocolate, fizzy dring, Chips, Chewing gum.

Maunga Nui and Iti's Assembly 10th May 2019

On Friday we shared our learning at our assembly.
Here are are our movies that show our space writing that we put onto green screen. Nui wrote about a starry night, Iti were using adjectives to describe the sun. Come into our class and have a look at all our published stories on our writing frames.

In the afternoons Maunga Iti have been working with Team Maunga exploring rocket launches into space. Hannah worked with Harley Barlow, Susanna worked with Kaelan, Tyler worked with Rakai, and Andrew worked with Ivy and Daniel S, to create a Stop Motion of a rocket launch. First they had to create their rockets in the LEGO room. Then we learnt how to take lots of pictures moving our rocket slowly each step. When we played our movie it made our rockets look like they were launching into space all by themselves. This week we are learning about gravity. The children choose the activity they want to do over the week to learn and explore more about our theme.
Here are their Stop Motions.

Reading therapy dogs

Every week we have the 'Reading therapy dogs' visit.  Today when they came we had a big talk about how to be safe around dogs.

One of the things we learnt was to check that a dog is safe before we approach them.

End of term - Fun Morning

Today was the last day of the term.  We were lucky to have a fun morning.  One of our fun activities was a breakout where the students had a series of problems to solve that would give them the clues and codes they needed to open up a lock bock.  This was a great experience for all of Team Maunga and highlighted to them how they need to work with each other to solve the problem.

This breakout was based around the easter bunny.

Share the Road - Safety around Trucks

Today we had the people come from Share the Road.  We had a classroom session in the library where we talked about blind spots and how trucks turn differently to cars.  Then we went outside and got to hop into the trucks, see where the blind spots were and even toot the horn.  We all had a great time and learnt lots.

Here are some photos of the day.
