Maunga Iti's Assembly Term 3 2018

On Friday Maunga Iti did an amazing job sharing their learning at assembly. We were so proud of all the children standing up to talk into a microphone in front of the whole school. Mrs Edwards was really impressed by the way you used clear strong voices. Tisayah did an awesome job on the computer changing our presentation slides. 
Well done Nate for getting our class Cool Kid Certificate this week for his great progress in reading!

We made a movie for our 'Chicken Yeah!' song. We made up some chicken actions and dances to go along with the music. We had a lot of fun pretending to be flying, scratching, racing. clucking, chickens!

We also made a movie to show our school values and how we practise these values every day at school. Our values are responsible, reliable, honest, caring, trustworthy, and respect. We also talked about why these values are important and how we can be the best that we can be.

Our native bird pastel art is up on Room 4's walls. They look very impressive with their warm coloured birds on a cold coloured forest background. The children used strong, bright colouring techniques.

Last Wednesday we had our inter school cross country. Well done to all the children who ran in their first ever cross country! Here are some photos of Maunga Iti children at the end of their long race.

Also exciting news.  So far our Year 1's are ranking 8th in the world for our scores on Matifics Maths week warmup - Their challenge begins in 6 hours (I'm guessing because of different time differences).  So lets keep this up Year 1's.  Looking forward to seeing our Year 2's stepping up as well.  WAHOO!!!

Matific

As many of you will now know Room 5 & 6, are entering a Matific competition as part of New Zealand's Maths week, happening next week.  Each child has their login and password in the front of their Learning Journals (unless they have not been bringing them to school).  From Thursday our children have been learning to log in as part of a warm up for this competition.  Currently we are ranking on the leader table so this is great news for all of us. 

We have set tasks for our children in Matific and these relate to building number knowledge.  Some tasks may seem nice and simple but others will seem more complicated.  Although you can login via  www.matific.com , I would encourage you to download the app if you are using a tablet or your phone.

Although we will not have access to Matific for a long period of time it seems like a fun and interactive way to engage our children in maths.  Please feel free to contact your child's teacher if you have any questions.

Portia Woodman

Today we had a visit from Portia Woodman. This was very exciting for all of us as she is more than just a national hero to many of us here at Ohaeawai. To some of us she was also family.

She talked to us about how we need to be proud of who we are and where we come from. She told us about how she came from Kaikohe, and that she was proud of this and all that she had accomplished because of who she was and is.

Along with telling us about needing to be proud of who we are, she also talked to us about how if we want something badly enough ... we can achieve it. And if that doesn't quite work out, something else will.

She reminded us that there will be highs and lows, and that nothing is going to be perfect all the time, but we will get better and we will get stronger if we keep trying.

This attitude reminded us of how Mrs G keeps reminding us not to say "I can't do something" but to rather add 1 word to the end of it. "I can't do something YET!".

Dreams were also something she talked to us about. She explained her life long dream of playing Netball alongside her idols, becoming a silver fern, but also how that dream shifted into a new dream of playing Rugby for NZ.

Instruction videos - Linking writing to real purpose

Here are some movies that the children in our class created based on what we have been focusing on in both writing and within our topic of keeping ourselves safe.  

A small group of children work with Mrs G each morning as part of a group who are learning about how writing has a real purpose in life and on strategies that help them get their ideas down.  Below are the videos they created as part of this groups focus.  They asked some other children in the class to help them make their writing into a movie as they worked out this was something they would need help with.

First they came up with their instructions (morning focus and classroom writing time).  

Next they asked buddies to help them video (or take photos) of each of these steps.  

Third they asked Mrs G to help them put it into a iMovie.  

Then they added their words.

Finally recording their words.

I'm sure you will agree these are fantastic examples of both writing and a real life application of writing for purpose.

Learning through Play Week 1 Term 3

Here is a small video of things our little play based learning group have been up to this week.  It shows examples of how their playing has lead into guided learning and when pairing these together this is creating a powerful learning environment and motivation for both writing and further learning.

The purpose of this group is to increase their oral language so that their oral language can assist their learning across the curriculum through these oral experiences.  This then has a spin off effect on their focused learning times as these experiences act as a springboard for further learning.

We can't wait to see what this small group of children achieve next.

Stop motion movies created

Writing happens outside of school

Here is an example of a piece of writing a child completed over the holiday.  When she arrived at school on the first Monday back she asked if she could please publish it onto an explain everything and then have it uploaded to our blog.  Well done Sienna M.

Here is also an example of another piece of writing that a child created to share with the class as they were away sick.  She logged onto our class site to view what it was that the class was writing about.  She was lucky as she had access to a family iPad at home and did her work straight onto it and then shared it with our class.  Well done Nakita. 

Both pieces of writing are great examples of how writing can be an enjoyable thing to do both at school and at home.  They are also great examples that we can use as rewindable learning moments to share in class as part of learning we will do in the future.  Well done.



If your child does complete writing at home please help us to share it by either sending it to school with them or taking a photo of what they have done and emailing it to us directly.  Our kids love seeing their work up on the blog and getting comments and questions about what they are doing and learning.  This is such an important part of their learning journey.

Te Ra O Te Wiki

This week we have been learning the days of the week in Te Reo.  We have been learning the actions to go with it to help us remember.

So...

To help us remember the days of the week, we created a short movie that we can replay to help us.

Mrs G got Matua to help us work out how to convert this into a Matua/Whaea Says (like Simon Says) game which we hope to present at our assembly in Week 2.  Thank you Frank, Liam and Cheyne for volunteering to take on this role in our assembly!  It is a big one.

Here is the words that we will be using to help us practice our days of the week (as well as other actions that we use in our classroom on a daily basis).

Measurement Maths

When having a clean out of iPads I located these two examples of how children use iPads in our classroom to record events that they do and thing they are learning about.

They relate to our Measurement maths that we had at the end of Term 2.  We hope you enjoy.

This video shows children using different non-standard units to measure their own shadows and learn how to compare their measurements and shadows to their peers.  It was a fantastic fun way to practice these skills that will become apart of their life long learning journey.

This Explain Everything is a presentation that the children made to record the things they measured.  Great work guys, it was a fantastic idea.  

Matt King - Duffy Assembly

Last term we had a special visitor Matt King come to our school for our Duffy Assembly.
We enjoyed listening to how reading has helped him become a politician for the National Party. His favourite book as a student was the Guinness Book of Records. 
Tisayah, Harley, and Jade were presented their books by Matt King in assembly! We were all given a new and exciting book to take home and keep.

Maths workshops

Heidi has the iMovie bug!!!

Today we had our maths workshops.  We decided to take some short snippets of things we were doing.  Heidi saw the opportunity to step up again... Not only has she volunteered to run one of our workshops next week but she also wanted to create an iMovie to show others what we do.

She worked with Legacy and Stella to get this movie published in time to share at our assembly in the afternoon.  

Pretty impressive.

Stop Motion Movie Making Instructions

This week during writing time children working with Mrs C Monday and Wednesday were asked to make a  movie explaining the steps of stop motion.  

Their first task was to discuss the steps that needed to make a movie.

Write these down clearly for others to read and listen to.

Record the scenes that supported each of the steps.

Piece it all together using iMovie - including adding the written steps.

What a great result they have come up with.  Ruby, Nicole and Heidi did a great job of piecing it together and they did a great job of sharing it at assembly.  Well done.

Heidi I am so proud of you for stepping up and volunteering.  This was not your writing group but when you saw and opportunity to get yourself involved you grabbed it (and nailed it).  To be honest, once you saw the opportunity to get involved.  MAGIC!!!

Our new School Pou

Recently we had our new Pou unveiling.  Here is a story that Sienna M made and published using Explain Everything.  The part she enjoyed most was taking and adding pictures.  It was really strange because Mrs G suggested taking these pictures in Portrait rather than Landscape (but they soon worked out why).  

Sienna M wanted to share this 'Recount' as it had a clear introduction, sequence and conclusion.  

Recounts haven't been our classes focus for a while so Mrs G and Ms F were very proud that Sienna M had remembered to include all these parts of a recount.  Mrs Craig was too. 

One thing Sienna M learn't was that she needed to count 1, 2, after she and finished talking so she didn't end up cutting the end off her recording.  Great effort Sienna M.

Butterfly Life Cycle

Here is a presentation that Maia and Laylah created following the visit from the Butterfly Lady.

They researched their facts. 

Then decided what to write on each slide.

Next they added their pictures (and took pictures), to match what they were saying on each slide.

Finally they added their voices to each slide to make it more interesting.

They thought it was a shame that they didn't do this in the first term when there were so many caterpillars chrysalis and butterfly around our classroom.

Stop Motion

This week we have been learning to use Stop Motion on the iPads. Our focus has been to move objects in small steps and learn tips on what makes a good movie.

So far we have found out these things:

• You need to keep the iPad in the same place.
• Only move objects a little bit each time.
• You need lots of shots for one video.
• A background looks good behind the lego.
• We need to make sure our hands are not in the shot.

This first movie is by Nakita and Kaelan.

Our second movie is by Kaelan and Harvey.

Our third movie is by Waiahi and Keeara.

Our Stop Motion experts will be showing more kids how to use this app next week.

Learning Time

Here it is the sequel you've all been waiting for!

Harvey, Kaelan, and Rakai have put together a trailer to show some of our learning we do in Room 4. 

• First they brainstormed all the different subjects they wanted to shoot. 
• Next they used a storyboard to keep track of which learning they had taken a photo and video of. 
• Finally they put together all their footage into an amazing movie to share with you.

We can't wait for the third installment 'Playtime!'

Smoothie Day

Today in Room 4 we were learning to read and write recipes.

We had so many delicious bananas and apples we decided to make smoothies. 

First we wrote a recipe for our smoothie. 

Then we washed our hands. 

Next we cut up the bananas and apples and put them in the blender. 

After the fruit we poured in the milk and turned on the blender. It made a very loud noise! Finally we poured the smoothie into cups and drank them!

Captain Cashtastic

On Wednesday we had a very special visitor come to our school... 

Captain Cashtastic! 

He taught us all about the different types of money and their values. we also learnt the difference between a want and a need. Some things we need to buy to help our lives like food or clothing. Some things we want to buy but we don't really need like toys. 

We can't wait for this savings superhero to come back again!

          

Butterfly Lady

We were so lucky to have a special visit from the Butterfly Lady today! We loved her hat and her bright butterfly top!
We learnt all about the different stages of the life cycle. We didn't know the first thing a caterpillar eats is the egg it hatches from. We also learnt about how the caterpillar makes the shape of the letter J when it begins to change into a chrysalis.
Mrs Stevenson dressed up into a butterfly outfit. She had 6 legs, 2 long antenna, many eyes, beautiful wings, and a long tongue called a proboscis.

Fractions - Cupcakes in a mug baking

As part of our fractions rotation children have been working with a buddy to reading a recipe with lots of fractions in, and discussing what that means and finding the right measuring cups/spoons to use for each ingredient.  Please feel free to remake these at home.  If you can come up with some new cupcake recipes that help you and your children discuss fractions at home, please feel free to share these in the comments below so that this post becomes a resource for everyone.
